COASTAL shipping operator Seacorp Logistics said exponential growth in the cargo task out of the Perth metropolitan area up to Darwin has led to plans to upgrade to a larger ship.
The coastal shipping service, which is partly underwritten by the West Australian Government, has been provided by the independent Fremantle company since January 2006.
Seacorp managing director Craig Thompson said massive increases in the cargo task over the past few months had encouraged him to search for a vessel with an additional 20 per cent cargo handling capacity.
He is now finalising details for the new vessel, which is due to be in operation by mid 2007.
Mr Thompson said Seacorp had quadrupled its customer base and broadened the mix of cargo types it carried since it started operating the shipping service just over a year ago.
He said the shipping service provided the cheapest option for transporting cargo between the Perth metropolitan area and the Pilbara, Kimberley and Northern Territory.
Seacorp Logistics shipping service operates between Fremantle and the ports of Dampier, Port Hedland, Broome, Wyndham and Darwin.
