WA Cargo Boom Nets Online Help

Sunday Times, 25 March 07

WA’s resources boom continues to spin off associated technologies.

Fremantle-based independent shipping agency and marine service provider Sea Corporation has developed an internet-based document system, known as Seaweb, to tackle the complexities of producing commercial shipping documents.

Sea Corporation this week signed a contract to handle the shipping needs of Mid-West iron ore miner Murchison Metals Ltd.

Under the three-year contract Seacorp will handle all ship agency, marine surveys and international trade documentation for MML and assist with charter party requirements.

MML exported its first cargo of iron ore to China in February and expects to ship up to two million tonnes of high-grade ore a year through the Port of Geraldton during the first stage of its Jack Hills iron-ore project.

Sea Corporation managing director Craig Thompson said MML was one of a growing number of mining companies requiring independent specialist shipping expertise.

Mr Thompson said Seacorp’s diversified range of services included ship broking, ship agency, document execution, marine surveys, inspections and provision of specialised marine personnel.

“Unlike the majors, the emerging exporters don’t have specialised people on board to take care of shipping needs,” he said.

“Outsourcing allows them to concentrate on their core business.”
